Sonex February Workshop a "Super" Weekend!
02-08-11

John Monnett gives a basic overview of fuselage construction techniques.

Sonex Aircraft hosted another great group of prospective builders at the 47th Sonex Aircraft Builder's Workshop on February 5-6! Attendees from across the country traveled to Oshkosh, despite Super Bowl weekend scheduling and a massive winter storm throughout the Midwest, to learn more about building, owning and flying Sonex Aircraft. The group constructed sample Sonex metalworking projects, received detailed informational sessions about Sonex, Waiex and Xenos Aircraft, engine options, AeroConversions products, and all other aspects of building, owning and operating Sonex Aircraft. Unfortunately, low ceilings and snow showers prevented Sonex pilots from performing fly-by's for the crowd, however, attendees spent plenty of time examining factory prototypes and getting their questions thoroughly answered by Sonex staff.

New EAA President Rod Hightower visited the Sonex Workshop on Saturday afternoon, and spent the lunch break meeting and talking with Workshop attendees. Saturday's lunch break also included a brief presentation from Bob Mackey of Falcon Insurance, plan administrator for the EAA Aircraft Insurance Plan about homebuilt aircraft insurance considerations. On Saturday evening, many Workshop attendees took the opportunity to join Sonex Aircraft staff in attending the EAA Chapter 252 annual banquet, held in the EAA Founder's Wing. Attendees saw more of Rod Hightower, as he was the banquet's guest speaker. On Sunday afternoon, Charlie Becker of EAA made presentations to the group about aircraft certification, Sport Pilot regulations and more.

The Sonex Aircraft Workshop continues to be an extremely valuable experience for our builders, saving them time, money and answering many frequently asked questions in the building process. Sonex Builder Workshops are held several times per year at the Sonex Aircraft, LLC facilities in Oshkosh, WI, and significant kit discount incentives are offered for attendees. Our next Sonex Workshop will be held April 30-May 1, 2011. Sign-up Today!

Sonex CEO Jeremy Monnett welcomes attendees, discusses the weekend's schedule, and introduces the Sonex staff.

Workshop attendees then get their turn with the microphone to introduce themselves and give their building and flying histories.

Sonex President and Founder John Monnett gives a walk-around presentation describing the common design elements and features of Sonex Aircraft airframes.

Sonex Lead Warehouse Associate Jason Algra gives a tour of the Sonex warehouse facilities, showing-off the features of Sonex Aircraft kit parts and packaging.

EAA Insurance Plan Administrator Bob Mackey of Falcon Insurance gives a briefing on homebuilt aircraft insurance considerations.

New EAA President Rod Hightower took the time to visit the Sonex Workshop, tour the facilities, and mingle with workshop attendees.

Workshop attendees had the opportunity to try-on the prototype Onex single-place, folding-wing, aerobatic sport aircraft.

Attendees get started on their sample metalworking projects, which represent every major skill required to build the aircraft.

Although most Workshop participants build from our kits with pre-formed parts, wing rib building is part of the Workshop so that builders learn basic aircraft metalworking concepts.

John Monnett begins Workshop day 2 with an in-depth discussion of Sonex Aircraft engine options and the evolution of VW aircraft engiens and our own AeroConversions AeroVee Engine Kit.

Sonex Aircraft's Mark Schaible gives a briefing on AeroVee Engine options as well as Jabiru Engines, Propellers, Instruments, Upholstery and kit accessories.

John Monnett demonstrates Sonex Aircraft control surface construction, showing details with a closed-circuit camera's overhead projection.

Kerry Fores, builder of Sonex SN# 9 "Metal Illness" talks about flying Sonex Aircraft, seen here using universal pilot hand symbology.

Workshop attendees complete their sample metalworking projects before heading home to begin work on the real thing!

Sonex Aircraft, LLC is proud to announce that the number one prototype of the new Onex single-place, folding-wing kit aircraft made its first flight yesterday, January 27, 2011 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, WI. Piloted by Sonex General Manager, CEO, and Onex designer Jeremy Monnett, the AeroVee-powered N111NX made an extensive flight orbiting the field. Monnett also made a low approach before landing, signifying his satisfaction with the initial handling and performance of the aircraft.

"The airplane is sweet," commented Jeremy Monnett upon landing. "It feels great!" In celebration of the achievement, the "Corsair-style" wing-fold system was used to stow the aircraft back into the Hornets' Nest R&D hangar.
