Sonex First Flight: Rodney Dunham

Congratulations to Rodney Dunham of Knoxville, Tennessee who recently reported the November, 2008 first flight of his Jabiru 3300 powered, Standard Gear Sonex (S/N 260)! "N260SX took flight for the first time 29 NOV 2008 with retired NASA test pilot Glen Pingry at the controls," writes Rodney. "Much thanks to Chris Boultinghouse for a superb job of airframe construction. Kudos to John Davis, without who's help 260 would still be in my garage." Gold Wings are on the way to Rodney!

1/3rd Scale Waiex Model Flies!

Carlos Rangel of Bridgewater, VA recently completed a meticulous 1/3rd scale flying model of the Waiex! Carlos plans to compete with the aircraft at this year's Top Gun Scale Invitational meet to be held in Lakeland, FL this May.

Sonex Builder Shane Fewings Wins
Australian LAA Crusader Cup

Sonex builder Shane Fewings was recently awarded the Crusader Cup by the Australian Lightweight Aircraft Association (LAA) for his AeroVee powered, Standard Gear Sonex (S/N 386). Fewings' Sonex was imported to Australia as a partially completed aircraft. The project was originally started by Patrick Connor of Appleton, WI, was later sold to Drew Waterworth (builder of Waiex S/N W0024), who sold it to Fewings. Fewings gives most of the credit to Waterworth and Connor for the aircraft's award-winning condition. "Patrick did the lions share of the work," Comments Fewings. "He did a beautiful job. Drew also did some work as well and advised me along the way."

The Crusader Cup has previously been awarded to another Sonex builder, Stuart Trist (S/N 181) in 2008.

AeroVee Nikasil Cylinder Upgrade to be Featured on UltraFlight Radio Interview

Sonex Aircraft CEO and General Manager Jeremy Monnett will be interviewed on the UltraFlight Radio Show tomorrow (Tuesday, April 14) at 12:35 pm Central Time (1:35 Eastern, 10:35 Pacific) regarding the new AeroVee Engine Kit Nikasil Cylinder Upgrade.

Now Available for AeroVee!

Sonex Aircraft, LLC is pleased to announce another new enhancement to the popular AeroConversions AeroVee Engine Kit with the introduction of weight-saving Nikasil Cylinders. The Nikasil Cylinder upgrade package reduces AeroVee Engine weight by just over 9 lbs and is offered at significantly lower cost than Nikasil or comparable NiCom kits offered by competing VW conversion manufacturers. A new AeroVee Engine Kit can be upgraded with a Nikasil Cylinder set for $500. Existing AeroVee engine customers may purchase the Nikasil Cylinder upgrade for $750. Equipped with Nikasil Cylinders, the AeroVee Engine Kit is the lightest-weight fully-featured 2180cc VW aircraft conversion available in the marketplace today, at 152 lbs less oil and exhaust.

Nikasil is a trademarked electrodeposited oleophilic nickel matrix silicon carbide coating for piston engine components. AeroVee Nikasil coated aluminum cylinders replace standard cast iron cylinders, saving 37 ounces per cylinder and offering superior resistance to corrosion and wear. AeroConversions Nikasil Cylinder sets include Nikasil-coated aluminum cylinders, graphite-coated cast aluminum pistons, wrist pins, wrist pin snap rings, and piston rings.

Sonex Forums Scheduled for Sun 'n Fun

Sonex staff member Kerry Fores will be flying his Jabiru 3300-powered Sonex Aircraft, "Metal Illness" to Sun 'n Fun 2009 for a few days and presenting forums about Sonex Aircraft. You'll be able to find him on the flight line in the homebuilt parking area. Sonex will also be giving a Fly-In Participation Award for all Sonex, Waiex, and Xenos Aircraft that make the trip to Sun 'n' Fun.

Sonex First Flight: Germán Cárdenas

"I have been waiting for this moment for so long, so it was one of the happiest moments of my life," writes Germán. North Florida Sonex Fest a Great Day

Sonex Aircraft builders Dan Weseman, Eric Williams and Chris Smith organized the North Florida Sonex Fest on Saturday, February 28th, hosted at Dan's home and hangar on Haller Airpark in Green Cove Springs, Florida. Approximately 40 Sonex Aircraft enthusiasts and their families were in attendance throughout the event, which included a rib building demonstration, fly-by's, an aerobatic demonstration, lots of great food, a bonfire and plenty of hangar talk. In addition to Dan and Chris's aircraft, Tony Lewis and George Barth flew-in with their Sonex Aircraft as well.

Sonex Aircraft, LLC would like to thank Dan, Eric and Chris for hosting another wonderful grass-roots Sonex builders' event!
