New! Introducing Sub-Kit Quick Builds
and Expanded Kit Ordering Options!
10-30-15

Quick Build Wing and Fuselage Sub-Kits now sold separately!

Sonex is pleased to announce several expanded airframe kit purchasing options!

Quick Build Sub-Kits, Better Quick Build
Quality and Shorter Lead Time:

Quick Build Kits are now available as individual wing and fuselage sub-kits for Sonex, Waiex and Onex aircraft models (Note: Fuselage Quick-Build only available separately for Onex, as wings need to be constructed on the fuselage for accurate rigging). Now you have the flexibility of Sub-Kit ordering combined with the lowest possible build time offered by Quick Build Kits! Sonex Aircraft Quick Build Kits are now constructed entirely in-house at the Sonex factory, offering superior quality and shorter lead times. You can see pricing and place orders for Quick Build Sub-Kits from our Pricing Page.

Credit Card Restrictions Eliminated for US and Canada:
Looking to maximize credit card airline miles or other reward points? Now you can place complete kit and engine orders on your credit card in the US and Canada. Visa, MasterCard and American Express accepted. ($5,000 credit card charge limit per-order applies outside of the US and Canada)

Eliminate Non-Needed FWF Options:
Although we have poured a lot of effort and offer a high-level of available support for AeroVee and Jabiru engine installations, we recognize that some builders just want to "roll their own" alternative engine installations, and some may not be quite ready to make an engine installation decision at the time of airframe kit order. Kit buyers can now choose to remove firewall-forward equipment that they don't need from their kit orders. Cowlings, Engine Mounts and Spinners may be optionally excluded for a reduction in kit price.

New! Horizontal Split Universal Cowlings
10-23-15

Sonex is excited to announce the introduction of new Horizontal Split Universal Cowlings for Sonex/Waiex and Xenos airframes! These new cowlings will ship with all kits beginning this week! A benefit of the NASC Teros UAV program, horizontal split cowlings require no trimming to fit to the aircraft firewall, eliminating several hours of fitting work from your project. Universal cowlings are designed to fit AeroVee/AeroVee Turbo and Jabiru engine installations.

Note: As we are stocking-up to include these new cowlings for all future kit orders, individual orders separate from kit orders will be subject to extended lead-times. Kits ordered for Jabiru engine configuration will receive vertical split Jabiru cowls, however, horizontal split Universal cowls may be supplied upon request.

Teros UAV Horizontally-Split Cowl. Note: chin bulge for high-output alternators and side cowl exits to keep optics on belly clean.

Horizontal Split Universal
Cowling: $442.50

SubSonex First Flight: Redge Greenberg
Flies First Customer-Built SubSonex!
10-16-15

Redge Greenberg with build partner Dwight Tolfer and SubSonex S/N JSX0003.

Redge gives a "thumbs-up" in the cockpit of his SubSonex!

Congratulations to Redge Greenberg of Durango, Colorado, who made the first flight of SubSonex serial number JSX0003 yesterday, October 15th: the first customer-built SubSonex Personal Jet to fly! "I flew the SubSonex this morning, for about 35 minutes… all went well," writes Redge. "My regards to Dwight Tolfer who was a big help for me during the construction project that was done almost entirely in my garage."

Redge received the first SubSonex kit delivery in February, 2015, an Ultra-Quick-Build kit with optional Triton Trailer (see our February 16th Press Release). The SubSonex is sold as a Quick Build Kit only, leaving very little work for the customer, and providing almost everything needed to fly with the exception of avionics and paint! Two Quick Build Kit versions are offered: an EAB-compliant kit for the traditional builder including pre-built wings, fuselage and canopy; and an Experimental Exhibition category Ultra- Quick Build Kit with no “51 percent rule” restrictions. The Ultra-Quick Build customer will install the easily-removable outboard wing panels, engine and fuel system, bolt-in the retractable landing gear, install avionics, electrical systems and controls, install the supplied BRS, fiberglass components and upholstery, and add paint.

"I hold commercial glider, helicopter & single engine land licenses, accumulating 4500+ hours in numerous aircraft," wrote Greenberg for our February press release, "but I never got the chance to fly a jet. I first saw the prototype of the SubSonex at Oshkosh, and followed the development for over a year. When Sonex offered the jet as a kit, I was first in line. Like my RV8, the SubSonex is aerobatic, but the Sonex company also included a ballistic parachute for extra safety."

With two SubSonex JSX-2 factory prototype aircraft now flying, Redge's SubSonex makes number 3 in the worldwide fleet, with 6 more customer kits currently under construction.

Gold Wings are on the way to Redge!

Sonex First Flight: Robbie Culver
10-13-15

Congratulations to Robbie Culver of Naperville, Illinois, whose AeroVee Turbo powered, standard gear Sonex (S/N 1517) flew for the first time on October 10th! "Sonex 1517 took to the air on Saturday, October 10th, 2015 at the Aurora IL airport after 4 1/2 years of building," writes Robbie. "The Turbo AeroVee ran smooth and strong and the flight was uneventful. To all the other builders out there, keep going! This is a moment worth all the effort you put into it. Transition training made me feel ready for the flight and allowed me to relax and enjoy the moment. What a great airplane to fly! A huge thank you to my wife Brenda and son Joshua for helping me and supporting me, Michael Farley for his friendship and assistance, and the staff at Sonex Aircraft, LLC."

Robbie currently serves as President of the Sonex Builders and Pilots Foundation. As a freelancer and friend to Aero-News.net, his first flight attracted attention from Editor Jim Cambpell. Robbie has also posted several recent videos including a touching video retrospective of the build from his wife, Brenda, a video of his Sonex T-Flight Transition Training experience, and a video of his first flight. These videos and more can be seen on the Sonex YouTube Channel's Sonex Flying Stories playlist, and via the embedded video below.

Sonex Holds 61st Builder's Workshop Event!
10-12-15

Joe Norris demonstrates the AeroVee powered Waiex in a high-performance climb for the Workshop crowd on Sunday.

Workshop attendees gained hands-on metalworking experience using Sonex construction techniques with their Workshop projects.

Sonex Aircraft held it's Fall, 2015 Sonex Builder's Workshop on October 3-4th, the 61st Workshop event since the company's founding in 1998!

The event hosted another enthusiastic group of current and prospective Sonex Aircraft builders, as attendees from across the country and around the world traveled to Oshkosh to learn more about building, owning and flying Sonex Aircraft. The group constructed sample Sonex metalworking projects, received detailed informational sessions about all Sonex Aircraft designs, engine options, AeroConversions products, and all other aspects of building, owning and flying Sonex Aircraft.

The weather was a little bit challenged throughout the weekend, however, opportunities opened-up for factory prototype aircraft fly-by's on Sunday, and every Workshop attendee seeking a Basic Aircraft Familiarization Flight through our T-Flight Transition Training Program was able to fly! Workshop attendees also had the whole weekend to inspect every inch of Sonex factory prototype aircraft on the ground, and try them on for size.

The Sonex Aircraft Workshop continues to be an extremely valuable experience for our builders, saving them time, money and answering many frequently asked questions in the building process. Sonex Builder Workshops are held several times per year at the Sonex Aircraft, LLC facilities in Oshkosh, WI, and significant kit discount incentives are offered for attendees. Our next Sonex Workshop will be held February 27-28, 2016. Sign-up Today!

T-Flight Basic Aircraft Familiarization Flights are a popular option for Workshop attendees. Read More about T-Flight Transition Training packages!

John Monnett welcomes the Workshop crowd, lays-out the agenda for the weekend, introduces staff, and passes the microphone around for attendees to introduce themselves.

John Monnett gives a walk-around tour of the technical design features that go-into the Sonex line of aircraft.

Kerry Fores gives Workshop project demonstrations before turning attendees loose on their own metalworking projects.

Workshop participants get to work on their Sonex projects!

Charlie Becker from EAA stopped-by during lunch on Sunday to speak about current EAA initiatives and member benefits.

John's closing session of aircraft building tips is one of the most popular and informative highlights of the weekend.

JSX-2 Fleet Doubles: SubSonex N241SJ Flies!
10-07-15

The skies over Oshkosh were once again filled with tiny jet noise this afternoon as the JSX-2 worldwide fleet doubled with first flight of SubSonex N241SJ! John Monnett took the sister ship of #1 JSX-2 prototype N141SJ for a short flight today, which was uneventful and successful. #2 JSX-2 N241SJ was constructed at the same time as N141SJ, but flying the aircraft took a back seat to flying and refining it's "Sonex yellow" sibling, leading to it's use advertising the design as Bob Carlton's airshow bird. The gray, shark-mouthed JSX-2 #2 will serve as Sonex's Oshkosh-based SubSonex factory demonstrator, and incorporates all the latest refinements to the SubSonex design.

Onex First Flight: Michael Zurawski
10-06-15

Congratulations to Michael Zurawski of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, whose AeroVee powered, standard gear Onex (S/N ONX0148) flew for the first time on September 30th! "The flight could not have gone better," writes Mike. "Everything worked perfectly and no adjustments were needed after the flight. I think what made this possible was a starting with a good kit, attention to details, and Sonex transition training. I would like to thank everyone who helped in anyway during the 22 month building process. Let the flying process begin!" Gold Wings are on the way to Mike!

Sonex Aircraft in the News: Sonex Fleet Featured in Cirrus Owners and Pilots Magazine!
09-25-15

Sonex Aircraft, LLC is featured in the September issue of Cirrus Pilot, official magazine of the Cirrus Owners and Pilots Association. "The Step-Down Fix" written by Matthew McDaniel (download 864kb PDF file) focuses on the Sonex fleet of aircraft as a cure for the boredom and intensity of IFR cross country traveling often experienced by those flying complex aircraft like the Cirrus. McDaniel travelled to Sonex factory headquarters in Oshkosh, WI and took the T-Flight Transition Training course before sampling other aircraft in the fleet for the article. The 7 page feature describes the T-Flight experience, along with the versatility, fun and economy of the Sonex fleet. The article even features a diagram of two Onex folding-wing aircraft fitting into a small T-hangar with a Cirrus! Sonex Aircraft are the perfect "runabout" second aircraft for Cirrus owners looking to work out their fun-flying kinks!

This article appears in the Sept/Oct 2015 issue of Cirrus Pilot magazine and is posted courtesy of the Cirrus Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) and the author (Matthew McDaniel).  Copyright COPA and Matthew McDaniel.  All rights reserved and unauthorized reproduction is strictly prohibited.

Sonex First Flight: Tim Shaw
09-21-15

Congratulations to Tim Shaw and build partner Lee Wilkinson of Belton, England, whose Jabiru 3300 powered, standard gear Sonex (S/N 1600) flew for the first time on September 20th! "At 12 noon on the 20th September (UK time) Sonex kit No 1600 flew for the first time in the capable hands of Sonex agent and UK Test pilot Mike Moulai," writes Tim. "Lee Wilkinson and myself, Started building in February 2013. She is a conventional gear (tail wheel) Jabiru 3300 powered rocket ship and quite a change from the Streak Shadow I have owned for the last 7 years! She needs another 5 hours test flying before we can get our hands on her but it was quite a day to see all our hard work come to fruition as she left the ground. I did manage to get a trip as observer and she handles like a dream! You now have two more happy Sonex flyers to add to the fold." Gold Wings are on the way!

Sonex Builder Events: Northeast Sonex Builders Hold Successful 7th Annual Fly-In!
09-21-15

The 7th Annual Northeast Sonex Fly-In was held on Saturday, September 12th at the Keene, NH airport, and was a successful event once again this year, despite some weather challenges.

"A total of approximately 40 people attended the event," writes event organizer Mike Smith, "with the weather keeping the attendance a bit lower than past years. But there were several new faces this year who were either building or thinking of building a Sonex product." Six Sonex aircraft were able to make it in to the fly-in, displaying a good cross section of airframes, engines and finishes.

Attendees were also treated to some aerobatics overhead during the event, as the New England Aerobatic Club held their practice on the field that day, including one Pitts pilot who also happens to be building a Sonex!

"The presentations were very well received," writes Mike. Presentations included Aaron Knight talking about his epic trip from Massachusetts to Denali, Alaska last year. Larry Rice gave a presentation about modern LED aircraft lighting, "with the perfect balance of technical and practical information," adds Mike. And Mike Smith gave a presentation about the AeroVee engine. "Everyone learned something, or had something to contribute."

"Thank you to our sponsors, Sonex Aircraft and Wicks Aircraft, for the door prizes. And a HUGE THANK YOU to the local EAA 1314 chapter! They coordinated all the on-site logistics including food, and everything ran very smoothly." Sonex Aircraft would like to extend it's own huge thank you to Mike Smith for organizing this wonderful grass-roots builder fly-in tradition for the 7th year!

Congratulations to Dale Barkley of Paris, Illinois, whose AeroVee powered, standard gear Onex (S/N ONX0147) flew for the first time on September 2nd! "Just a note to let you know that kit ONX-0147 is now an airplane," writes Dale. "Started construction early 2014 and DAR inspection was 9/2/15. Flew within hours of the inspection with only a very slight rudder trim needed other than getting mixture set for the hot humid weather we were having. Thanks to Kerry and Joe [Sonex Tech Support] for all the questions answered during the build and to Elliot, the first flight pilot, who has shown it is really a fine little airplane and will perform up to the level claimed by Sonex, right side up and upside down." Sonex Education Initiative: Pathways to Flight Foundation Ready to Take the Next Step!
09-09-15

The Pathways to Flight Foundation in Huntingburg, Indiania has made great progress with their Sonex Education Initative build, reporting the completion of their Tail Kit! Based at the Dubois County Airport (KHNB), the Foundation's goal is to introduce area youth to aviation, aircraft construction, and career fields in aerospace by building a Sonex kit aircraft. With the Tail Kit now complete, Pathways to Flight has successfully obtained funding to purchase a Sonex Fuselage kit, which will ship in just a couple weeks!

According to Foundation leader, and former Sonex Builders and Pilots Foundation board member Eric Seber, the project is designed to teach students not only aircraft construction and aviation concepts, but teamwork, business skills, relationship building, and to link concepts learned in the formal school setting to the real world. "Aviation desperately needs young people," writes Eric, "and young people need aviation."

With a Fuselage Sub-Kit on the way, Pathways to Flight still needs your donations to fund wings, finishing kits, engine and avionics. Donations can be made online via the Dubois County Community Foundation!
