Sonex First Flight: Tom Kondrat
10-30-13

Congratulations to Tom Kondrat of West Ossipee, New Hampshire whose standard gear, AeroVee powered Sonex (S/N 1414) flew for the first time on October 14th! "I want to thank the usual cast of characters starting with John Monnett for having the vision and tenacity in designing the Sonex and especially all the people that have supported John over the years so he could design this truly fun airplane." writes Tom. "This includes his family both biological and business. Keep up the great work. I can not wait to see what is next. For those that are still building, keep going -- the minute the wheels leave the ground you forget all the late nights, cut fingers, driven rivets, etc. and realize it was all worth it!" Gold Wings are on the way to Tom!

Sonex Builder Events: 10th Annual ASA Crossville Fly-In Attracts Record Attendance!
10-17-13

The Crossville, TN ramp is crowded with a record 40 Sonex Aircraft!

The American Sonex Association held their 10th annual fly-in event on October 11-12th in Crossville, Tennessee, achieving record attendance with a total of 40 Sonex Aircraft! "We could not have had better weekend weather and the aircraft arrived in droves," writes ASA Founder John Davis. "A new tradition was started this year, when an aircraft arrived we gave them a certificate with arrival number to display in their windscreen and they blew an air horn to announce their arrival. When number 40 arrived, the air can had been depleted."

Sonex Aircraft, LLC had an official presence at this year's ASA Fly-In for the first time, as T-Flight Transition Training program Chief Flight Instructor Joe Norris flew-in to the event with the factory prototype Waiex. Joe was also accompanied by Oshkosh area builder and part-time Sonex employee Wayne Daniels in his Jabiru 3300 powered Sonex, making his second trip to Crossville. Attendees Aaron Knight of Norwell, Massachusetts and Walt Turk of San Antonio Texas nearly tied for the longest distance traveled to Crossville in a Sonex Aircraft, with Aaron Knight taking the honor by a mere 2/3rds of a mile. Victor Vicari of Goreville, Illinois was voted Best in Show by the event's registration crew for his tri-gear Waiex S/N W0100.

The weekend included many events and activities including 34 Sonex Aircraft demo rides given by seven of the aircraft owners in attendance, presentations by builders and vendors, door prizes donated by several vendors including Sonex Aircraft, a number of very active parts swap tables, and the traditional "Big Boy BBQ" dinner as the event's finale. Sonex builder and previous Crossville attendee Michael Arnold was honored with a Missing Man formation flight on Sunday. Michael tragically lost his life in the September 16th Washington DC Naval Yard shooting.

"This event would not take place every year if it were not for the hard work of the guys and gals that make this event a success," writes John Davis. Sonex Aircraft would like to once again extend a huge "Thank You" to John and his crew of event organizers and helpers for making the 10th Annual Crossville Fly-In the most successful grass-roots Sonex builder-organized event to-date! The 2014 ASA Fly-In is already scheduled for October 10th and 11th. You can find more pictures, videos and details about this year's event on the ASA web site.

Sonex Aircraft, LLC Celebrates 55th Sonex Builder's Workshop Event!
10-12-13

Sonex CEO Jeremy Monnett is silhouetted against the Oshkosh sky in the Onex taildragger.

Sonex Aircraft held it's Fall, 2013 Sonex Builder's Workshop on October 5-6th, celebrating the 55th Sonex Workshop event since the company's founding 15 years ago in 1998! The event hosted another great group of current and prospective Sonex Aircraft builders, as attendees from across the country traveled to Oshkosh to learn more about building, owning and flying Sonex Aircraft. The group constructed sample Sonex metalworking projects, received detailed informational sessions about all Sonex Aircraft designs, engine options, AeroConversions products, and all other aspects of Sonex Aircraft ownership.

Although there was low ceilings and rain on Saturday, some great flying weather on Sunday afforded an opportunity for many attendees to experience the Basic Aircraft Familiarization training package via the Sonex T-Flight Transition Training program, while other attendees flew with us during the days preceding and following the Workshop. Sonex CEO Jeremy Monnett also had an opportunity to demonstrate the Onex factory prototype during several fly-by's on Sunday morning. Workshop attendees had the whole weekend to inspect every inch of Sonex factory prototype aircraft on the ground, and try them on for size.

The Sonex Aircraft Workshop continues to be an extremely valuable experience for our builders, saving them time, money and answering many frequently asked questions in the building process. Sonex Builder Workshops are held several times per year at the Sonex Aircraft, LLC facilities in Oshkosh, WI, and significant kit discount incentives are offered for attendees. Our next Sonex Workshop will be held March 1-2, 2014. Sign-up Today!

Workshop attendees gather for a group picture with Sonex Aircraft staff.

Sonex T-Flight Transition Training program Chief Flight Instructor Joe Norris takes students through pre-flight in preparation for their 1/2 hour Basic Aircraft Familiarization flights. Workshop attendees who are licensed pilots may sign-up for the T-Flight familiarization package as-part of their Workshop weekend.

Workshop attendees take the opportunity to look-over every inch of Sonex factory prototypes.

Jeremy welcomes attendees, introduces staff, and passes-around the microphone so that attendees can introduce themselves to the group.

Sonex Founder and President John Monnett gives a walk-around tour of factory prototype aircraft, focusing on the key design features that make Sonex Aircraft so successful.

Sonex Manager of Technical Communications Kerry Fores gives a presentation about using the Sonex Aircraft plans system.

John demonstrates metalworking techniques to the group, which they will use in constructing their sample metalworking projects.

Jeremy demonstrates solid riveting techniques for constructing Sonex Aircraft main wing spars.

Workshop attendees get to work on their metalworking projects! The Sonex Workshop project uses the Sonex Aircraft plans system and incorporates all major types of metalwork used in the construction of Sonex kits.

Workshop attendees take a tour of the Sonex warehouse, not only giving them a glimpse of Sonex production operations, but also showing them the quality and finish of Sonex kit parts and packaging methods.
