SonexAus Australian Builders Group
Represented at Temora Natfly Event
04-16-12

SonexAus members gather for a group picture at Natfly 2012.

In recent years the Recreational Aviation Australia (RAAus) National Convention (Natfly) at Temora in New South Wales, Australia has become the pre-eminent sport aviation event attracting thousands of visitors from around Australia. Held April 6-7, many hundreds of aircraft gathered in the (Australian) autumn sunshine at Temora for this year's event. Natfly organizers recognized the growing Sonex fraternity by allocating a prime hangar to the SonexAus builder's group.

The group displayed a range of completed aircraft, an AeroVee engine and several partially built projects. Several Sonex seminars and a Jabiru engine workshop were conducted in the hangar throughout the event. More than three hundred individuals visited the display, attended the seminars or admired the Sonex aircraft on-display, according to SonexAus organizers.

"Sonex was front of stage at the RAAus Annual Convention Dinner when SonexAus President, Lynn Jarvis, was honored with Life Membership of Recreational Aviation Australia," reports Stuart Trist of the SonexAus group. "While Ben McGuinness narrowly missed first prize for his immaculate Waiex 3300, it certainly won the ‘people’s award’ for the breathtaking workmanship and attention to detail."

Over the weekend a new SonexAus Committee was elected and the group will now seek incorporation as a not for profit association in Australia to more effectively support their rapidly growing membership base. You can find out more about SonexAus at: www.sonexaus.wikispaces.com

Sonex First Flight: Peter Anson
04-11-12

Congratulations to Peter Anson of Mount Macedon, Victoria, Australia whose Jabiru 3300 powered, standard gear Sonex (S/N 894) flew for the first time on April 10th! "It flew for the first time in the capable hands of Aub Coote (pictured) who is just 86 years young," writes Peter. "His comment was that it was the 'easiest taildragger he had ever flown.' I'd also like to thank builders Adrian Clout, Jeff Schultz, Gus Schlegal and Michael Hildebrandt, whose excellent web sites helped me out when I got stuck." Gold Wings are on the way to Peter!

SonexAus Australian Builders Group Holds
Annual Fly-In at Yarrawonga
04-10-12

Over thirty Sonex owners, builders and prospective builders gathered at Yarrawonga Airport in Victoria, Australia, on the weekend of March 24-25 for the annual SonexAus builder's group fly-in. SonexAus combined this event with the Melbourne, Australia's Lightweight Aircraft Association to draw even more people to this year's event.

Over a dozen current and prospective builders were able to get airborne in a Sonex over the weekend and give their enthusiasm for building a big boost. More than 80 people attended the Saturday night dinner and aviation trivia quiz. On Sunday morning, Sonex builders Tony Richardson and Greg Jones manned the BBQ to feed the hungry fly-in masses. Two members travelled over 3,000 miles by commercial flight to attend the fly-in from Perth, Western Australia.

Our special thanks goes-out to the SonexAus group for making this grass-roots Australian builder's event a success!

Sonex Holds Successful Forums at SNF 2012!
04-09-12

Sonex leaders John, Jeremy, and Betty Monnett recently returned from a trip to the Sun 'n Fun International Fly-In & Expo in Lakeland, FL. The Monnetts visited the Fly-In on Wed, Thurs, and Friday supporting a number of industry and customer activities.

John and Jeremy attended the ASTM Electric Aircraft Symposium on Wednesday, giving presentations on the E-Flight Initiative electric propulsion project, and participating in the rest of the day's Electric Aircraft Symposium activities. It was fascinating to hear the many parallels and similar challenges we all face as practical electric flight becomes a reality. Sonex Aircraft will continue it's support of ASTM's efforts to shape the production & safety standards for electric aircraft to meet the needs of this exciting future industry.

Jeremy and John gave three forums at Sun 'n Fun on Thursday and Friday, and were excited to see every seat filled for all three forums. These forums included information about the Sonex, Waiex, Xenos and Onex sport aircraft designs, the AeroVee and AeroInjector, and information about Hornets' Nest R&D projects. On Thursday afternoon, the Monnetts hosted a "happy hour" for Sonex Aircraft builders in attendance of the show at the Sunset Grill on Sun 'n Fun grounds.

John Monnett gives a forum about the AeroVee Engine Kit and AeroInjector to a full house.
